Each animal has its own special characteristic that makes it stand out from the pack. For many animals, it’s their speed. They are capable of moving quickly so they can outrun danger. Others are able to snatch their prey as quickly as possible without being noticed.
Humans are able to run at speeds that average 15 miles per hour and can run as fast as 20 miles per hour. This is an impressive feat but that’s nothing when compared with what many of the animals on this list are capable of doing.
Red Kangaroo – 45 mph
The red kangaroo is the largest marsupial in the world as well as the largest native of Australia. The red kangaroo hops at 15 miles per hour but it can accelerate to speeds of up to 45 mph in short bursts.
This animal can also consistently travel at speeds of about 25 mph for about two miles at a time. The red kangaroo has developed this ability to move quickly while hopping as an evolutionary trait. The animal needs to hop not so much to escape predators but rather to travel long distances. The Australian outback is known for its vast open spaces, thus requiring the kangaroo to hop to get from one place to the next.
The kangaroo is unable to walk normally like other mammals. This is due to the kangaroo’s exceptionally large feet.
The strong muscles around the upper parts of the legs make it capable of hopping quickly and moving at such fast speeds for a brief period of time.
